COMMUNITIES
AETA, DIAZ
Diaz is a barangay situated within the municipality of Porac, a province in Pampanga, Philippines. The Diaz community had to move numerous times after the Mount Pinatubo eruption due to weak infrastructure and/or lack of amenities. Once enough time had passed, they moved back to their original area.
We interviewed the Barangay chieftain of Barangay Diaz, Juanito Dela Cruz. He was born in 1972 and has a wife and four children. We got the chance to sit down with him, as well as have a meal. We also raised funds to provide stationery kits to the youths there when we visited.
Indigenous knowledge is very important to the Diaz people as their children need to learn their roots and their culture, and also to continue to pass it down to future generations. This knowledge is never forgotten because it is a part of their daily living. Children are taught how to cook and farm that are specific to their indigenous culture. Children are also taught how to speak in Pampangan language as well as their own Diaz dialect. Diaz culture is also partly maintained when foreign groups do homestay in Diaz, where both sides would showcase their traditions and culture - their dances and wear traditional clothing. Furthermore, Diaz students are also taught their own culture in school. Chieftain Benito is confident in that the Diaz people are proud of their roots and will never lose their identity as Aeta.

Regarding the educational experience of the students from Diaz, the highschoolers are sponsored to receive free education and sometimes accommodations to encourage them to go to school. Chieftain Benito does not feel like these youth would lose in touch with their Aeta culture when they go to highschool outside of Diaz. He remarked that some students are lazy to attend school despite the strong support like sponsorships and scholarships. He reasoned that it could partly be due to the hot weather. He stresses the importance of studying hard, especially since money is no barrier, and that if they are not doing so, it would be a waste of time.

Children from Diaz do not face discrimination in their school, Villa Maria. This could be due to the school population being all Aeta. Most Diaz students study up till high school and no one has left Pampanga for higher education. The school within the municipal does not have enough classrooms and amenities to accommodate all the school grades comfortably. Grade 1 to 6 students have to share one classroom, with two teachers coming from the department of education: one teacher teaches grade 1 and 2, and the other teaches grade 3 and 4. There would be more teachers granted by the department of education if there were more classrooms.

The chieftain has seen some positive changes compared to a few years ago, such as new installations of streetlights, road infrastructure, even the school began its building when he started as barangay counsellor. The nearest school prior to this one built by Chieftain Benito was too far away from the community. He hopes for more classrooms for the school and that the improvement of infrastructure would be carried out as it would be easier to get water and reach the city.
